Ghanaian reggae musician, Black Prophet has claimed that the Highlife genre is not an authentic Ghanaian music.
The 42 year old Jamaica based musician noted that the only authentic Ghanaian music is the traditional music that were known to our forefathers.
Speaking to Berla Mundi on TV3’s New Day, the music star born Kenneth Wilberforce Zonto Bossman made the statement in reaction to suggestions that Highlife should be promoted more that other musical genres in Ghana.
” Highlife came about when Ghanains began saying ‘Y3nko nko b) highlife’. It was the poor blacks going to play songs for the rich whites living the “high life”. Highlife is not our music. Our music is kpanlogo, agbadza, fume fume, among others.” Black Prophet explained
” If we want to talk about our authentic music, then we are talking about the music that our forefathers used to play. And that is not highlife.” He further noted
Black Prophet whose recent album was considered for the Grammy Awards has worked and collaborated with various international reggae artistes including Rita Marley, Pliers, Lucky Dube, Alpha Blondy, Buju Banton among others.
