Ibrahim Mahama Drags Chairman Wontumi to court for Defamation demanding ¢5m!

Business Mogul and brother of former President Mahama, Ibrahim Mahama has sued Ashanti Regional Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party NPP Bernard Antwi-Boasiako popularly known as Ibrahim Mahama at the high court for defamation demanding damages to the tune of 5million cedis.

According to the writ issued on July 13, 2020 Chairman Wontumi on June 29,2020 sat on his TV station to “make defamatory statements of and concerning ” Mr. Ibrahim Mahama accusing him of being a “beneficiary of stolen wealth or money out of which plaintiff has bought a vehicle and a house for a lady”

The exact defamatory statement made in Twi Translates into English as follows: “he has bought a car, it is said he has bought a car for hajia ‘for Real. Then he has bought a house and given it to her in addition, then he has snatched Kenpong’s girl, has snatched Kenpong’s girl. Because the money that er, it was when we just came into power, that his brothers went and stole money for him, do you understand?…”

Mr. Ibrahim Mahama’s lawyers believe that by making those publications, Chairman Wontumi meant and was understood to mean their client procured his wealth or money through improper or unlawful means insisting the statements made by chairman wontumi are “palpable lies made without justification”.

They are also suing the media house where he made the comments for  also uploading the defamatory claims on its youtube page, subscribed to by over 5000 people, for it to reach a larger population. Also joined to this suit is one Kenneth Mensah the editor or publisher of an online portal www.dailymailgh.com for also publishing the said defamatory content.

They also insist that all three defendants published the content “complained of with the sole object of creating public disaffection for Mr. Mahama and exposing him to public ridicule, opprobrium, contempt and odium  as confirmed by his friends and family who are deeply concerned about the statements complained about”

They are therefore demanding an “order of perpetual injunction restraining defendants whether by themselves, their servants or agents from further publishing the same or any similar  derogatory and defamatory matter of and concerning” Mr. Mahama.

Mr. Mahama is also demanding an unqualified apology published within seven days and the award of damages to the tune of 5m cedis plus legal fees.
