Veteran Ghanaian musician, Rex Omar has revealed that he’s been a card bearing member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) since 1992.
The Board Chairman of Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) who debunked claims that affiliated with the party in 2016 indicated that he joined the party as far back as 1992.
The highlife music legend made this known to MzGee in an interview on 3FM’s Showbiz927.
“I did not affiliate with the NDC in 2016, I’ve been with the NDC since 1992. I’m a card bearing member of the NDC since 1992. People should go and check. When Ghana was inaugurating President Rawlings in the fourth republic, its my song with Amadzeba and Akosua Agyapong that was used during that time.” He stated
He argued that artistes are just like any other ordinary citizen and, so, should be allowed to freely associate with their preferred political parties and advocate their policies publicly if they so wish to do.
“People must understand that we are running a democracy here. Should everyone belong to one party? No! I’ve belonged to the NDC since 1992. The only thing is that I decided to play my role as an artiste so if there was something I had to do for my party, I did it as an artiste. But I realized that Ghanaians.” The ‘Abiba’ hitmaker stated
Rex Omar is one of the many Ghanaian celebrities including John Dumelo and MzBel who publicly endorsed the NDC during the 2008 General elections.
