NMJ Ghana, organizers of the Golden Movie Awards Africa (GMAA) have rescinded their decision to host the award scheme outside Ghana this year.
According to the Director of the annual award scheme, Mrs. Mimi Andani Michaels the move was necessitated due to this year’s Year of Return.
The organizers had earlier this year indicated that nominee announcement which has been held in Ghana since its inception will take place in Uganda this year.
But Mrs. Micheals who spoke to MzGee stated that investors and movie producers from the diaspora are moving to Ghana this year hence the u-turn.
The former Big Brother Africa Housemate explained that, “We realized that everyone was coming to Ghana and we were going out. It didn’t make sense so we had to quickly make the u-turn because its the ‘Year of Return’,”
“Today we have Caribbean and Jamaican film makers who are filming in Ghana and they are all coming here with their International directors and they said they are hoping to meet actors to scout and possibly work with,” she added.
According to her, other African country would have benefited from the international film makers if the nominee announcement was held outside Ghana.
“They attended the launch this year so imagine if we had done it outside Ghana. The benefit would have gone to another country”
She however added that the next edition will be held in another African country if they get sponsorship from that country.
The award scheme honours movie makers in Ghana and some West African countries including Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Cameroon.
